The release of Drupal 8 on November 19, 2015 comes with more than 200 new features and improvements for programmers and developers. Drupal being flexible, highly scalable and technically advanced, its latest release; Drupal 8; is looked after to be the strongest.
1. Mobile First
Drupal 8 is architected to support mobile first initiatives, i.e. Drupal 8 can be easily managed from a smartphone with a responsive experience that works in devices of all shapes and sizes. This means that one does not have to build a mobile website.
Supports “Headless Drupal” or now known as “Decoupled Drupal”, meaning regardless of the technology used for front-end development, Drupal can be used only as a back-end content management system.
2. Authoring
In the past, authoring in Drupal was totally dependent on the development for managing the content. But now, in addition to WYSIWYG editor, the provision of in-line and in-context editing, content management is far easier than ever. This is huge for people who simply need to edit content and manage content on the website.
3. Performance and Scalability
Just to give you an idea, a previously calculated benchmark found Drupal handling 230 requests per second as compared to Wordpress handling 40 requests per second - almost 6 times as much traffic.
Drupal is a complex and interactive application with customized functionality, this would normally reduce an application’s performance. But due to extensive and smart caching, it runs on lower hardware specs, giving it the edge against its competitors regarding handling large amounts of traffic.
4. Community
The Drupal community is one of the most important aspects of Drupal 8. This 15 year old community is spread across the globe.
Training - “Automated Web Testing with Selenium”
Session - “Typed Drupal - a great combination of PHP7 and Drupal 8”
5. Growth Potential
The amount of things that can be done with Drupal, is what makes it such a popular platform.
One can start with a small, basic brochure site and gradually add community features, e-commerce, groups, workflows, publishing engines, rating systems, scheduling systems, mapping systems, etc., making it easy to change and grow with the organisation.
6. Translation and Localisation
Drupal 8 platform was built to support any languages from the authoring side, with customizable interfaces to dozens of languages. It also supports business processes that involve language translation and localization.
7. Integrations
With a growing ecosystem of digital technologies, integrations are very important for marketing and more. Drupal is a great foundation for Web content management and digital experience management owing to its capabilities to integrate with the state of the art technologies and current marketing technologies.
8. Ownership: no vendor lock-in
